LESSON 23

Writing the Word on Your Heart

Part 3

Listen to Audio

You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.  God's word sets you free.  The Holy Spirit is right by your side.

Jer. 31:33    But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

The word is with power.

Eze. 36:26-27  A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.  And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do [them].

God will cause you to obey His commandments.  He will put the Word in your new heart.

We don't have the power to obey God in and of ourselves.  If we did, then Jesus would never have had to come.  The law would have been powerful enough.

Rom. 8:3-4  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The power is in the Word to cause you to fulfill it.  The power to bring the promise to pass is already in the Word.  You don't have to struggle to bring the promises to pass.  The promises will come after you and overtake you.

God says that He will perform it.

Psa. 107:20    He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered [them] from their destructions.

God's not waiting on you.  God says He will do it, with or without us, despite our own shortcomings.  Many of us weren't even searching for God when He saved us.

God never gives a command without the way and the power to fulfill that command.  He commands us to keep His commandments.  He has provided a way for us to have the power to keep these commandments by having His Word written on our hearts.

Deuteronomy 6:4-6 gives us four keys to having His Word written on our hearts.

Deut. 6:4-9  Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD:   And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

4 STEPS TO GETTING GOD'S WORD WRITTEN ON YOUR HEART

1.)  TEACH THE WORD.

Deut. 6:7  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.

The word ‘teach’ here means to sear it on their hearts.  It invokes the mental image of a branding iron.

God understands how the human mind works.  Many learn more when they teach others what they do know.  Many pastors say they receive more than the congregation.  Teach what you know.

Matt. 28:19-20     Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

Why does God say teach?  He says this for two reasons; so people may hear the Word and so you will get the Word in your heart.  When the Word is constantly on your mouth and you're teaching someone, you see things you haven't seen before.

The Bible says that the early church went from house to house teaching the Word of God.  We don't need ordination titles or a Bible college degree.  You just need to go next door to your neighbor and teach the Word of God to him.  Teach principles of the Word.

Take examples and look for opportunities to teach your children everywhere you go.  Teach your wives what you know.  And as you teach them, the Word becomes written on your heart.

2.)  TALK ABOUT THE WORD.

Deut. 6:7  ...and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Eph. 5:18-20  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;  speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;  giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When God gives a command He always follows it with a way to fulfill it.  Whenever you get together, talk about God.

Matt. 12:34  O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

When you hang around someone all day it is easy to tell where they are at spiritually, because of what comes out from their mouth.  What they talk about will flow from the abundance of their heart.

The Jewish culture would take the Word of God and play it to a tune.  That is how they memorized scripture.  As you talk the Word of God, it progressively gets written on your heart.

When you speak it you also hear it.  When you hear it, the more it becomes ingrained in your mind.  Statistics say you only remember 10% of  a sermon, but if you get together with others and start to talk about it you will remember more.  The more you talk about it the more it gets on your heart and becomes a part of your life.

Josh. 1:8  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

The word ‘meditate’ here means to mutter.

It's God's command to talk about the Word.  It is not a suggestion. The more you talk about it the more it will be written on your heart.
