Lesson 10
Resurrection of the Dead and Eternal Judgment
Section 1 - Why These Doctrines Matter
Section One
We have arrived at the fifth and sixth foundational doctrines of Christ: resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. These are not popular subjects in the modern church - yet the writer of Hebrews places them among the elementary, foundational things: the baby doctrines that should have already been mastered before moving on to maturity.
The early church preached on these two subjects constantly. They were central to the gospel message. We have largely abandoned them.

God will swallow up death forever. That is not a metaphor. That is a promise.

3. Isaiah 26:19 says "together with my dead body they shall arise" - this is Jesus speaking , declaring He will rise, and that when He rises, we will rise with Him.
4. At the moment of Christ's death, the veil of the temple was torn from to , not bottom to top. History records it was approximately four inches thick - not something that tears by natural means.
5. When Jesus rose from the dead, the power of resurrection life that flowed through His glorified body seemed to shoot through the ground itself and began pulling people out of their graves. This was a , a down payment, a preview of the coming resurrection of the dead.
This is not symbolic. It already started. And it will be completed at His return.
6. Daniel 12:2 teaches that is going to get up. The resurrection is universal, but it leads to two very different destinations: some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.
7. The resurrection itself is not the reward. It is simply the . What matters is what comes next.

Section 3 - The Living God of the Living
Section Three
8. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are not dead - they are with God right now. All the saints of old who have gone before us are not gone; they exist.
9. There is life after death - more accurately, there is after death. You will exist eternally. The only question is ?
The funeral story: When a believer dies, he has graduated. He has gone to be with Jesus. Ecclesiastes 7:1-2 says we should mourn at birth (a person has entered a world of sorrow) and rejoice at death (a believer has left it and arrived at glory). We have it entirely backwards. If we truly believed in the resurrection, we would not grieve as those who have no hope.

Section 4 - The Power of Hope: Why This Doctrine Matters
Section Four
The resurrection of the dead is a foundational doctrine because it is the engine of hope - and hope is the engine of everything else. The hope of resurrection produces holiness. Not rules. Not legalism. Not external pressure. Hope.

10. Everyone who has this hope in Him himself, just as He is pure. The hope of resurrection produces holiness - not rules, not legalism, not external pressure.
11. Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no , the people cast off restraint." When a people lose their sense of eternal purpose and eternal destiny, they lose the force that restrains and motivates them.
12. Hebrews 11:1 says "Faith is the substance of things for." If you do not have hope, faith has nothing to attach itself to.
The great deception: The church has shifted almost entirely to preaching about success, happiness, and fulfillment in this life. But the early church preached about the next life. They set their minds on things above - and that upward focus released extraordinary purity and extraordinary boldness. We have traded that eternal vision for a very comfortable present-tense Christianity. We are paying the price in the lack of holiness, the lack of power, and the lack of genuine discipleship.
13. The early church preached about the life. They set their minds on things above - and that upward focus released extraordinary purity and extraordinary boldness in them.

Section Five

14. For those who have surrendered to Christ, there is no condemnation - they have already passed from into life. The resurrection for them is the of a journey that began the moment they gave their lives to Christ.
15. Hell is not God's punishment imposed on unwilling victims. It is the eternal consequence of the rescue that God freely provided.
| Two Resurrections | For Whom | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Resurrection of Life | Those who have surrendered to Christ; done good | Everlasting life with God |
| Resurrection of Condemnation | Those who have rejected Christ; done evil | Eternal shame and contempt |

Section 6 - Eternal Judgment Is Real
Section Six
Fire and brimstone is the language of Jesus and the prophets. It is not the invention of angry preachers. It is the Word of God describing what is literally coming for those who reject Christ.

16. Jesus warned that in that day , not a few, will say "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name?" - and He will declare "I never knew you." The judgment is not based on religious activity but on whether they truly Him.
The Rich Man and Lazarus - Luke 16:19-26
Whenever Jesus told a parable, He indicated it. Here He says, "There was a certain rich man" - these are not symbolic figures. This is a real account.
A literal death. A literal torment. A literal paradise. A literal and permanent separation. The man in hell was not unconscious - he was fully aware, fully suffering, fully able to think about his five brothers and wish desperately that someone would warn them.
17. In the account of the rich man and Lazarus, Abraham told the rich man there was a great fixed between them - those who want to pass from one side to the other .
18. The rich man was told: "They have Moses and the prophets. If they will not hear them, neither will they be persuaded even if someone ." The Word of God is the sufficient warning. It has always been sufficient.

19. "Vengeance is Mine" in Hebrews 10 is not directed at our enemies. It is directed at those who were once washed by the blood of Jesus, sanctified by His covenant, and then away, treating the blood of Christ as common.
20. The judgment for is greater than the judgment for ignorance. "It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment." (2 Peter 2:21)
21. Those who are in the Book of Life will be judged according to the good they have done and rewarded accordingly. Those not found in the Book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire, which is the death.
For those in Christ: The resurrection is not a threat but a hope - a burning, glorious, life-transforming hope that purifies us, strengthens us, and keeps our eyes on eternity. Go back, study these six foundational doctrines, let them become part of you. Only when these foundations are truly in place can we move on into the greater revelation and the deeper maturity that God is calling us to.
