Opening Blind Eyes

I counsel you to buy from

Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

—REVELATION 3:18

The eye salve mentioned in this verse is a reference to a famous medicine in Laodicea that was supposed to bring health to the eyes. Jesus was using this illustration to speak of the Laodicean’s need of something to remove their spiritual blinders.

The reference to eye salve in Revelation 3:18 points us to the need for something supernatural from God to clearly see. But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

—1 Corinthians 2:9-10

Paul consistently pointed God’s people to the need for a supernatural anointing to see clearly.

[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, by having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones).

—Ephesians 1:17-18, ampc

Paul was praying by the direction of the Holy Spirit that you and I would receive a supernatural anointing of insight into the mysteries and secrets of God. Paul was praying for the most spiritual people of his day, a people who would later be rebuked in Revelation 2:1-5 for having lost their first love. The Book of Ephesians was written more than thirty years before Revelation, yet Paul points them to the same truth, which is a need for a greater anointing from God to see Jesus as He really is.

Ephesians 1:18 is often misunderstood. The New King James Version says it this way: “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling.” Notice the verse says, “the hope of His calling”—not the hope of your calling here on the earth but the hope of His calling. We will never rightly understand who we are and our role in God’s great master plan of God until we understand who Jesus is and His calling.

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

—1 John 3:2-3

We have a desperate need for the spirit of wisdom and revelation Paul speaks of in Ephesians 1:17. We must come humbly before God, recognizing that having head knowledge isn’t enough. We need a supernatural impartation of spiritual eyesight.
